Surco Nuevo enjoyed a run during the hey-day of the San Francisco Bay Area's salsa scene in the nineties and early naughts, from 1993 to 2005. A Salsa band started by two childhood friends Scott Brown and Demian Contreras, the band was unique in instrumentation with Scott and Demian playing Cuatro and 12-String guitar respectively and using no piano, creating a unique sound that was both reminiscent of genres such as Son Cubano and Musica Jibara, and also seventies hard driving salsa with politically and socially conscious lyrics.
Surco Nuevo performed in venues featuring Salsa bands all over the Bay Area, such as Cafe Cocomo, The Ramp, Pier 23, Ashkenaz, La Pena Cultural Center, El Valenciano, Great America, and at many festivals and events, including San Francisco's Carnaval and Pittsburg's Seafood Festival.
